Why would people take magic mushroom?

"Magic Mushrooms" is a slang term for a type of drug made from -you guessed it- mushrooms. They are called magic because of the hallucinagenic properties that they have. -Dragonheart91*

There is more than one type of psycoactive mushroom, but 'magic mushrooms' usually refer to ones containing the hallucinogens psilocybin and psilocin, and are illegal in most places (but they're pretty easy to find growing wild!). Another mushroom that is psycoactive is amanita muscaria (aka fly agaric). They're the ones with white stalks and bright red tops with white spots on you get in Fairy Tales. These have a different psycoactive chemical in called muscimol. They also have ibotenic acid in, which is inactive but is turned into muscimol in the human body. These mushrooms are completely legal (in the UK anyway). Also, enough ibotenic acid is left over in your urine to be active, so if you're really desperate you could save your pee! I've read somewhere that it can go through up to 5 bladders and still be effective!

It can be used both spiritually for vision quests and opening up your mind or recreationally to enjoy the effects of the magic mushroom.

A good trip generally gives you massive mood lift and a sense of well-being, you will giggle and laugh. Ideas become more philosophical and you think alot deeper, these thoughts also flow more freely.

Then at the peak of the trip both auditory and visual hallucinations and many people (myself included) report life changing spiritual experiences. Things will change around you and your time perception won't be right. Memories and ideas sometimes come to life.

Basically it is a psychedelic rollercoaster - I use them spiritually, and other entheogens (such as Salvia Divinorum). Many people take them recreationally. They are a good first time introduction to the world of psychedelics or entheogens as they are tamer and although you do trip out and your reality is changed, it is nothing in comparison to strong doses of Salvia or other un-natural psychedelics, where a full feeling of leaving reality is likely to occur.
