There are several known causes: 1) Trauma, such as accidentally biting the inside of your cheek, piece of a potato chip jabbing your gums, broken tooth, etc. 2)Food allergy--citrus fruits are one type known to cause canker sores 3)Malnutrition--certain vitamin or mineral deficiencies 4)Illness--often viral, Though it is rarely cancer, it can be, so canker sores that have not healed after 2 weeks should be examined by a doctor.
