Glad you asked. The obvious reason people use Answers.com is to find answers and information. But who better to ask than the community itself?

We recently ran a poll on Answers.com's no.stupid.answers blog with the very same question. Below are some of the results and feedback that were given.

Answers from the Answers.com community and beyond. The following is the information collected from the poll results, plus more comments from Answers.com community members. Feel free to add yours to the bottom of the list. Poll results (as of August 5 2010):
  • Search engines just give links. Answers.com gives information. (44%, 117 Votes)
  • I trust Answers.com. (44%, 117 Votes)
  • The answers get updated. (32%, 85 Votes)
  • I like the social aspect of Answers.com. (27%, 71 Votes)
  • It came up in Google. (17%, 46 Votes)
  • Another reason... (list in the comments) (15%, 39 Votes)

Comments from poll takers and users:

  • It gives the opinion of the people and it gives you almost instant answers.
  • It will tell you anything, unless it's unanswered.
  • I like the fact that I can ask questions as well as answer them.
  • I like to provide well thought out answers because I see so many stupid ones all the time and people relying on poorly researched stories from mainline news outlets for their information. I really want people to be making their decisions based on accurate information, not just opinions, innuendo, and biased theories passed off as facts. I may not be perfect in my answers, but I try to always be as close as possible - except for occasional attempts at humor.
  • I use http://reference.answers.commostly. The way its entries combine different sources on the same page, starting with short, concise definitions and gradually working its way in greater detail onto lengthy Wikipedia articles, is nothing short of perfect. It satisfies my information needs, regardless of how much detail I need, often in a single page. What more could you ask?
  • Love the daily highlights, too. I hope it remains the practical tool it's proved to be in the five years or so I've been using it. It's only a pity the Find-As-You-Type feature has been disabled, it used to be better than Google's.
  • This is a wonderful site. I am 56yrs old and like to keep informed, I also like doing crosswords as I believe they are a form of education
  • I enjoy the exercise of answering problems that actually make me go and find a proper answer, not just what was in my head. And of ocurse, of actually understanding the question!!
  • I am a student. It is very useful to students to clarify their doubts. so I like it.
  • *sigh* I had typed three paragraphs, but before posting I decided to log into Disqus and lost it all. Will I ever learn to at least put my posts on the clipboard before submitting, just in case? But I actually didn't know I was going to be submitting anything - thought it was just a form control, not an AJAX-enabled one with poor usability. Anyhow, the gist of that post was that I like the variety of sources on the main site, having discovered it via Google. As for the wiki... http://xkcd.com/386/ Need I say more?
  • I enjoy using Answers.com for multiple reasons. I like to think that I'm giving a little something back, I enjoy the community, I like the fact that the answers are updated as they need to be and I like the fact that in the case of many of the answers given, I can actually get a glimpse into who the answerer is by looking at their profile. It's not like looking something up on the web where you get an answer but who knows who gave it or as is the case most of the time, the only thing you learn about the answerer is their name and the fact that they (hopefully) know what they are talking about. I guess to give the short and sweet version of the past two or three sentences, I like the fact that there is some accountability with Answers.com. To me that it makes it more trustworthy.
  • I love how different aspects of peoples opinions are viewed it really helps me get an overall idea about the questions and solutions
  • Well, it helps me for things like homework or projects. Mainly for facts and info... This is also easy website for contribution
  • This site has really been helping me find the answers to a lot of my questions and problems. It's a really good site and I love it very much. I hope it lives on forever.
  • I love this site
  • I love using WikiAnswers - it really helps my knowledge when I read some of the answers and being able to answer some of the questions that people ask is brilliant fun - I've got to say my favourite thing to do is correct flagged answers - it's good to see that so many people can actually get their answers rather than a mouthful of abuse. There's some brilliant questions out there and the deserve the answers.
  • The answers and info is contributed by users like me. We all help each other and share the knowledge!
  • I need answers to questions - it has those answers
  • I like the old version better than what you've done currently. It's not straightforward anymore and a lot of junk that I don't want to see. I just want my definition, or today's highlights.
  • I like to answer people questions.
  • Well I like it because answers come in fast and they are always very helpful.
  • This site has really been helping me find the answers to a lot of my questions and problems. It's a really good site and I love it very much. I hope it lives on forever.

Answer 1

Because that person is very visual in processing new information. Because the person may not be computer savvy, and may not be as familiar with search engines as others are. Because that person prefers a human touch when researching information. Because that person believes that there are people on the internet that are interested in more than wasting the time of others with foolish information and cyberbullying.

Answer 2

I would be happy to answer that question but I'm afraid that the answer may be incomprehensible to you. I'm sure you would be much more comfortable finding a site that participation doesn't involve thinking.

If you do not mind the higher chance of information being wrong, you can nearly effortlessly get answer to almost any questions. You can also ask for other people's opinion or ask for knowledge gained by experience.
