The first Muslim university in Europe was established in the 9th century. It was an extension for other universities from the eastern Islamic countries. Muslims also established other universities in Europe which was eventually was filled with European students.

When the students completed their education and went back, they were dressed with traditional Muslim attire. People knew that these returning students had received a higher education by the Muslims. The design of the attire eventually became the cap and gown that we know of today.

Arabs when they want to boost about their achievements always talks of Muslim and Islam but the fact is most of the scientific achievements has been done by Persians.

Tossing the cap has become a tradition as a symbol of the transition from student to graduate. It has no other meaning except rejoicing over "a job well done".
