Apparently, asparagus contains a sulphurous amino acid called methyl mercaptan, although there seems to be debate among scientists if there are other chemicals involved.

AnswerIt's quite common. A compound in asparagus is broken down by the digestive system and apparently only creates that odor among SOME people. AnswerThere are conflicting claims for asparagus concerning oxalates (calcium oxalate is one compound that forms kidney stones). The oxalate is excreted by the kidneys as well. Some nutrition sources say that asparagus adds to oxalates, some that it simply helps remove them from the body.

If you have ever eaten asparagus, you must have noticed. Or maybe you haven't? According to the Chemist i spoke to - and i must admit, i only understood about 1 word in 3 - only some of us have the (un)necessary gene that makes our pee smell after eating asparagus. What happens is that there's sulphurous compound found in foods such as garlic and asparagus, which, when broken down by our digestive system, comes out in our pee a little later. And it smells rank.

Asparagus makes your urine smell musty because it contains an enzyme that most humans can't break down in their digestive system. The enzyme isn't harmful, just smells bad ,and is filtered out by your kidneys and eliminated through urination.

Great question. Unfortunately scientist do not actually know definitively what causes the pungent smell after consuming asparagus. It is believed that the combination of certain digestive enzymes with certain chemicals in asparagus produce the smell. Actually on about 40% of those consuming asparagus develop the odor with in 30 minutes of ingestion.
