∙ 14y agoThe reason they need a phone line connection mainly, is so that your receiver can call out to DirectTV and report your movie purchases for billing. They usually call out about once a week.
Used to be, and I don't know if this still holds true, the receivers could store up to about 12 purchases and would report them on their next scheduled call should you use it in a mobile home or somewhere where phone service was't available.
It's a toll free call. I have Dish Network and sometimes when I leave the answering machine volume up I could hear the receiver call out on Sunday mornings. Note Add 5-27-09: From the North Florida area, my H20 DVR receiver for DirecTV, calls out to 1-800-633-4773, which when dialed from a phone will sound like a "fax tone".
