There is only one true God. Hinduism has so many forms to allow for universal appeal. So many forms of god allows for so many different ways of worship. Also, if you have a god that you worship in a particular way Hinduism can accommodate that by saying that it is another form that had not previously been discovered; very neat.

THE THOUSANDS OF HINDU GODS:

BRAHMAN - THE SUPREME HINDU GOD:

Brahman is the ideal god, the guiding and binding force of Hinduism

However, it opposes change of any kind and therefore is suitable for people leading a perfect life only.

THE SEVEN BASIC HINDU GODS:

For Hindus leading chaotic lives, there is no code of conduct. In its place there are seven basic Puranic gods.

They are,

1. Indra - god of dreaming

2. Shakti - god of illusion

3. Brahma - god of creativity

4. Vishnu - god of stabilization

5. Shiva - god of determination

6. Shani - god of status change

7. Yama - god of compulsion.

The Puranic gods evolved from Vedic gods, which are incomplete and overlapping.

INCARNATIONS OF VISHNU:

Vishnu is the default Hindu god and causes wave like ups and downs in our life. The parts of the wave represent the ten incarnations of Vishnu. Rama and Krishna are the most important incarnations.

THE GODDESSES:

The seven Hindu gods are derived from Brahman and are therefore made of a facilitating force (Saguna Brahman) and a retarding force (Nirguna Brahman). Theoretically there must be seven basic goddesses. However, practically there are just three viz. Parvati, Lakshmi and Saraswati.

The Hindu goddesses are the retarding forces of gods and thus enable us to have control over the gods.

THE CHILDREN OF GODS:

These represent a part of the facilitating force of gods. Thus, Ganesha is a part of the Shiva force and therefore, considered as son of Shiva.

THE SECONDARY HINDU GODS:

The primary Hindu gods are specialist gods. To use them reliably we must have a thorough knowledge of these gods and the situation in which we are going to use them. Therefore, there are secondary Hindu gods, which have the best features of the primary gods, for a comfortable life in the materialistic world. Thus, a single secondary god can be used for all purposes. Aiyappan, Durga, etc are examples.

THE SHAKTI GODS:

The Shakti gods are local gods of illusion that give an illusion that all is all right. They are ideally suited for poverty stricken villages.

Being local gods, they are infinite.

A DESIGNER MADE HINDU GOD:

There is a Hindu belief that there are 330 million Hindu gods. This means one Hindu god for every Hindu. It just means that a Hindu can have a god specifically designed for him.

Thus,

1. The different Hindu gods are not different forms of the same god

2. No two Hindu gods are the same

3. Even if the same god is known by many names, in every name the emphasis would be on a particular power of the god.
