The Caste System has so badly infested the country that inspite of best efforts of the government or the Reformist movements, India has not been able to come out of it.
It is a cheaper and more productive way to create a political win and social network for India.
Manu Rishi in fact, had only defined them as classes based on the occupations or professions and not castes as they are known now.
THE NECESSITY OF THE CASTE SYSTEM:1. Hinduism doesn't have a code of conduct. The caste system makes Hinduism flexible. It give gives Hindus freedom, better quality of life, easy adaptability and yet eternal discipline.
2. The castes enable Hindus to interact with all sections of the society without losing their identity.
2. The castes are based on geography, Natural Resources and seasonal changes and the nature of human beings. It is not based on just human needs and thus on occupations. There are more than 2,000 castes and more than 20,000 sub castes.
This infinite subdivisions shouldn't be misinterpreted as disintegration of Hindu society but as fine tuning of needs, availabilities and capabilities.
3. Every caste is an equivalent of a religion. Thus, Hinduism is an umbrella of compatible religions. Because of this non homogeneous nature of Hinduism, it is not possible to damage the entire Hindu religion.
4. The caste system is like a social ladder with infinite rungs.

The Caste system is basically how the consists of: Brahmins (priests), Kshatryias (rulers/warriors), Vaisyas (merchants/farmers), Shudras (servants/labourers), and Outcastes. In my opinion, the caste system affects the society by making the people more exposed to prejudice, stereotyping and other things. These differences in rankings often cause disputes within the society. However, how it affects the society depends on how you see it.

It is an oppressive system one many Indian people have been trying to do away with. Unfortunately, it still does exist in India, but most of it is concentrated in rural areas void of access even to electricity. In cities, people treat each other completely as equals but inter-caste marriage can still cause tensions between families. All in all, it is similar to racism: Racism still exists in rural places as Alabama, Mississippi in the US and inter-racial dating is still not as accepted today. And there are always exceptions, say cities like Chicago that are race-segregated. But all-in-all, America still got a Black president!

Caste system in India is quite a vexed issue. Everybody has a claim that his caste is a superior. Warriors in ancient times were called Kshatriya's and their descendants called themselves of being belonging to the caste Rajput, Kathri or Jat. Jats are one of the main agricultural upper castes of North India and had never considered themselves as a part of the caste system (or a caste), they where rather a race (a group of tribes). Most modern historians conclude that Rajputs are the decendants of Jats (those who travelled towards Rajasthan became Rajputs by marking out their Kingdoms). However, Jats where North India's most prominent fighters and where therefore considered warriors (Kshatriya's) as per the vedic caste system. Superiority of castes is a non-issue here. Because there is no central authority today which will define if one caste is superior over other and ofcourse the Government of India has already outlawed/banned the practice of castism. Only insane people have the time today to judge these issues....which is actually a non issue
