Jimmy Kimmell started this running joke early in the show's history. At the time, the show was not popular, and the guests weren't great. Therefore Jimmy ended with "Apologies to Matt Damon. We ran out of time" because Matt is an A-list star that they would obviously never bump him. The line amused producers, so Jimmy started saying it every night at the end of the show. The show became more popular, and Matt Damon decided to play along with the gag. It's a great fake feud!
