The most likely problem is lubrication. All-metal machines like the Singer 201 require grease on the gear teeth and oil on all other moving parts. Over the years, the grease and oil dry up and harden, causing friction inside the machine. Sometimes, fresh oil is all that's needed to soften the old oil and get the machine moving freely. In other cases, the old oil and grease must be removed with solvents and replaced with new grease and oil. Another possible problem could be thread wrapped around one of the rotating shafts between the balance wheel and the body of the machine, or under the rotating hook. Look all around the machine for tiny pieces of thread sticking out and, if you find some, pull them. You might find a long piece of thread wrapped many times around a shaft, binding it.
