The entire conflict of the novel is based upon the traditions of not only Maycomb County, but the issues are linked directly to the racial, social, and hierarchal traditions of the South. By illustrating how important family name is the reader is made aware of the low expectations of the Cunninghams, the Ewells, as well as others. Also, it is expected that Tom will be found guilty because as Scout purports, he was guilty the moment Mayella screams. One theme of the story is that "even though we were licked a hundred years before is not reason not to try", and Atticus lives this mantra; that regardless of the antequated and oppressive tradtitions of the South, the people must begin to effect social change.
Harper Lee discusses the Finch family history at the beginning of the novel to provide context and background information about the main characters, particularly Atticus Finch and his children, Scout and Jem. This history sets the stage for the themes of moral integrity, social justice, prejudice, and empathy that are central to the story. By understanding the Finch family's roots and values, readers gain insight into the characters and the community in which they live.
The function of relating the history of the Finch family in To Kill a Mockingbird is to establish the kind of community the family comes from, and where the family fits within that community. The novel was written by Harper Lee.
Alexandra looks at the Finch name as if it is a special brand that would be sold somewhere expensive like Bloomingdale's and never somewhere cheap like Walmart! Atticus is a successful lawyer that is trying to make a living in the small town of Maycomb, AL during the Great Depression. Atticus' wife passes away when Scout was 2 years old and he now lives alone with Jem and Scout on the main street of Maycomb. Calpurnia, the family cook, is an old black woman who helps to raise the children as their motherly figure.
It starts with the Finch family because it is showing the family history and that the main characters are in the Finch family. It is also adds to the mood of the story because it gives the impression of the Finch family history and the town history being long and old. The words flow slowly and there are very long sentences, which creates a tone of an old Southern town where hardly anything ever changes.
Flashbacks in literature and movies are often used to give backstory information. It can be used to explain facts that do not fit well into the current story line. Flashbacks are an easy method to "break into time", as long as the transition is done well.
