It is a religious naming ceremony within certain faiths and not always obligatory.

Christening often means Infant Baptism, a ritual where the parents take the baby to church to be blessed by an ordained minister, and to be sprinkled with water while the minister/priest says a special prayer. Those that adhere to this tradition feel that this ceremony is essential for the child's eternal welfare. Not all Christian denominations practice infant baptism. In those that do, the form and meaning often differs between the different religious groups. For this reason, it would probably be best to check with the Church of the believers themselves, in order to see why that particular faith practices infant baptism. (see related links)

every person except theVirgin Mother of Jesus, Mary is born with original sin on their soul handed down through all generations by the sin of Adam and eve ,when they ate from the tree of knowledge whichGod forbid them to eat. baptism is the the way original sin is removed from your soulJesus was baptized in the river by John theBaptist who said 'it is i who should be baptized by you' but Jesus insisted for John to baptize Him at which a dove appeared near Jesus and God the father said from the clouds "this is my Son, listen to Him. even thoughJesus nevered sinned nor born with original sin did this as a Jew forfilling his duty as a Jew. by being baptized christians vow with an adult speaking for him/her who can't yet talk. it used to be done 8 days after the bith as the Jews did obeyingGod's command that is why we are baptized forif we were not baptized and you die and free from committing a sin you go to limbo which thet sayis not bad nor is it good. Jesus will gather them up unto himself and take them to heaven when he defeats Satan and ends the world. after that you go to heaven or you go to hell, your future is up to you

A christening is a form of baptism. If one is old enough to understand then one would make covenants with the Lord to keep all of the commandments, to do all in their power to help build up the church and to spread the gospel.
