Why does a baby get christened?

Christening often means Infant Baptism, a ritual where the parents take the baby to church to be blessed by an ordained minister, and to be sprinkled with water while the minister/priest says a special prayer. Those that adhere to this tradition feel that this ceremony is essential for the child's eternal welfare. Not all Christian denominations practice infant baptism.
