How does a blanket kept things warm?

A blanket keeps you warm by containing your body heat, under the blanket, so that your body temperature stays comfortable. It also keeps the colder air from contacting your skin. A blanket creates a air barrier around you and insulates that area. Just like wool socks and thermal underwear, it keeps wind from removing the heat that is trapped there. Wind removes heat faster than most things. To see an example, take an ice cube and place it on a plate, take another and place it on a plate in front of a fan. The ice cube in front of the fan will melt faster because the ambient air is removed. A tent or an igloo serve the same purpose by creating a still air mass.
