well it depends. Your computer might be on some energy saving program that after a while left untended it shall turn off such as energy star. Or if your computer is on the floor your foot may of hit the "off" button.
There are many reasons why a computer may shut itself down:
It maybe overheating, make sure nothing is covering up the vents. When it does cut off, let it rest for about 10-15 minutes. Again, make sure nothing is covering up the vents. If it continues to cut off, then there maybe something wrong. You may have to call a computer repair man.
On Mac: if your computer reaches a certain temperature, it will shut off by itself because of Apple's safety feature.
On Windows: if you have selected the option to automatically shut down your computer after a period of inactivity, it will shut itself down. Other cases might be an auto restart from a software.
Perhaps because you have your automatic updates set to allow it to do so. Sometimes your computer will go online and see if it's software is out of date and keep it up to date for you. You will have to go into your control panel and find the auto update feature, and make it alert you when it can update and allow you to decide when it downloads it and restarts to apply the updates.

A basic problem is, when your Computer first stabled itself, (when you first bought it) it enables itself a Security System, which basically runs the whole thing, and when you turn it on, it switches on this TINY circuit which runs the computer, and sometimes when this circuit is disabled or faulty, it will automatically turn off, and so will the computer.
