A: Like turtles, snails are attached to their shells. They cannot leave their shells and live. If the body is out of the shell totally, the snail is dead. A few people have sworn their snail was alive, out of the shell, driving around. It must have been the current in the tank making their body appear to move. Snails cannot live out of their shells.

Answer: There are many predators who would love to chomp on a soft morsel like the body of a hermit crab. It can't make it's own shells so it borrows those of a snail in order to protect its soft body from violent sun rays and violent predators.

no they don't . they grow back a new one as their shell slips off , just like how a snake sheds it's skin.

Actually I am looking for the answer as to why DID my Snail leave its own shell and crawl into another when it was already inhabited by another snail? And how long will this take before one or the other leaves or dies?

For protection. I drop snails alot. I study snails but on accident I drop them. With out their shell they would die. You can drop a snail from a 2 story building and it wouldn't die.
