If they have lodging , many places people go to hike are built facing north so they can locate their way back. For example "the Bristol hiking centre" is built in a woods people hike in. if people get lost they can go there, or they can go just for a cup of coffee.

Note:Unless you need GPS accuracy, an ordinary compass can keep you safely oriented in relation to the cardinal points, and perhaps more importantly, it can keep you oriented in relation to your starting point. Under normal conditions, the direction of true north is less important. You need to know the general direction of the nearest highway, or how to get yourself back to your starting point.

Well all compasses are magnetic, but they only point north because of the earth's poles. The magnet in the compass makes the arrow point north because of the magnetic field.

Actually, they point to the magnetic north pole, which is not the same is the true north pole. To compensate, you need a magnetic variance chart.

Answer

The north pole of a magnet is so-called because, if suspended, it comes to rest pointing towards a location close to True North, which we call 'Magnetic North'. Since 'unlike poles attract', the magnetic polarity of that location is a south pole.

a compass points to magnetic north. This is not true north, but is close enough to be used as a guide for navigation. By knowing the direction of north, you orient yourself to read a map properly, if lost, you can use the knoledge of what direction north is to keep you traveling in the same direction trying to find your way out instead of walking in circles (which is what normally happens when people are lost)

Compass needles will align themselves with Earth's North/South magnetic field. To complicate things more, the magnetic North Pole is not stable and drifts around the real North Pole. Navigators and airmen receive daily directives on how to adjust their compasses to account for this.
