There is an attemp for liquids to evaporate due to molecular motion. The boiling point is the temperature at which the kinetic energy of the molecules is great enough for all of the molecules to leave the liquid phase. External pressure 'fights' this attempt because as the molecules leave the surface of the liquid they collide with the gas creating that external pressure and those gas molecules may 'push' the boiling molecules back into the liquid. When external pressure is increased there will be more of those collisions to push the substance back into liquid phase so more energy is needed for the liquid molecules to overcome the 'push' back into liquid form. This increases the boiling point.

Boiling point increases as the external pressure increases. This can be explained by the kinetic theory. When a liquid boils, its particles escape into the air. A few particles can escape at any temperature, which is why a liquid evaporates, but the process is inhibited by collisions with air molecules, so many particles are knocked back down again. As the temperature of the liquid is raised, more and more particles have enough energy to escape, until we get to the boiling point when they all have enough energy.

Atmospheric pressure affects this process in the following way. If there is higher pressure, there are more air molecules per centimetre cubed (they are more crowded together). This means escaping liquid particles are more likely to collide with them. We need to provide more energy to get them all to escape, so the point at which this happens is a higher temperature.
