Canada has an earlier harvest season than its neighbors to the south. Crops are usually all harvested by mid October therefore the celebration of Thanksgiving is during that month.

Many Canadian provinces also receive Remembrance day (November 11th) as a holiday. In order to break up the holidays, Thanksgiving was placed in October, between the two holidays Labour Day and Remembrance day.

There is also Canada's long association with Britain where the harvest cycle begins with Lammas Day (August 1st) ends at the autumnal equinox in late September. This time of year is associated with the celebration of bounty since the 6th century and is marked by church and laic celebrations

In 1863, president Abraham Lincoln designated the last Thursday in November as a national day of Thanksgiving. But in 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt changed it to the fourth Thursday in November -in case there were ever five Thursdays in the month.

Canada's Thanksgiving isn't celebrated in November. It instead is celebrated in the preceding month of October. By law of January 31, 1957, Thanksgiving is to be celebrated on the second Monday of October. It's on the fourth Thursday of November that Thanksgiving is celebrated in the United States of America, by 55 Stat 862 of December 26, 1941.

Harvest takes place at different times. Canada has a shorter growing season and therefore the harvest takes place earlier than that of their southern neighbors. Thanksgiving happens when the crops are taken in and the work of gathering crops is done for the year. In Canada, this happens about one month earlier than in the USA.
