The red color has been associated with left-wing movements from many years ago, the flags used during social revolts of 1848 in Europe were red. Nowadays, in communist countries, the red color is supposed to symbolize the blood of the workers.

Most forms of socialism (not only Communism) have used the colour red since 1848. Also during World War II comunists were distinguished by wearing a red arm band on their right arm.
