Daisy had, to paraphrase Fitzgerald, eyes that were full of money. She could have married Gatsby, but because he did not have the kind of wealth that her present husband Tom had, she left Gatsby. Gatsby regretted losing her, knowing that she would have become just as wealthy with him, only she would have also been loved deeply.
