He was lost in the woods and being threatened by wild animals when Virgil appeared and offered him a way out through Inferno.

The above is true, but it must be understood that the woods and the wild animals are an allegory and should not be taken literally. At the beginning of the Inferno, Dante states that he found himself in a dark wood, beset by dangers, and contemplating suicide. Virgil appears to him and leads him on the road to salvation.

Dante goes into the Inferno in "The Divine Comedy" to gain a deeper understanding of sin, repentance, and Christian salvation. He is guided by the Roman poet Virgil through the nine circles of Hell, encountering sinners and witnessing the consequences of their actions. Through his journey, Dante learns about the consequences of sin and the importance of spiritual guidance in finding redemption.

I am taking this as a literal term and not some metaphorical...metaphor. In the ninth and last circle of hell, treachery, lucifer is frozen in a lake (has a name I think) made from his own tears.

It says that traitors to their lords and benefactors are frozen in a lake of tears, in all conceivable contortions.

Because in the Divine Comedy, Dante states that the Devil is very large with very large wings, and that the Devil will flap them constantly, sending out cold air to Treachery and Fraud, and the wind gusts can be felt throughout the Inferno. Also, that the Devil is imprisoned in the ice and cannot leave.
