Your heart pumps blood to all of your cells. Blood contains oxygen and nutrients. When you exercise, your cells use up oxygen and nutrients to get energy. The heart starts beating faster to pump more blood to the cells and make up that lost energy.

Why does heart rate and respiration go up with exercise?

The more you exercise - the more oxygen your body's muscles need. In order for your heart to supply more oxygen - it must beat faster.
