The view of three magi or wisemen comes from the record that three gifts were given, gold, frankincense and myrrh. There were probably more wisemen and undoubtedly more in the party.
The Bible doesn't say how many there were.
Most people include them at manger because it makes a neat little package for the shepherds and them to be there at the same time, and the pagents and plays would have a hard time depicting the time differential. It was probably about two years after His birth when they arrived.
