What is rust composed of?
Rust (in its "regular" red form) is an iron oxide called iron(III) oxide. It's formula is Fe2O3, and we call it ferric oxide or hematite. And that's different from iron (II) oxide FeO, or iron (II,III) oxide Fe3O4. There are three basic forms of oxidized iron, and there they are. Rust is basically ferric oxide caused by the action of air, or to be more precise, the action of oxygen and water droplets on iron.

Rust is Iron Oxide which has accumlated on top of the iron. The top layer of the iron, when exposed to moisture or water, reacts with the oxygen in the air to form rust. Rust can also form when Iron is exposed to a strong oxidizer or acids. But rust is not a chemical property of iron, it's in fact a completely different compound which used to be iron before reacting with oxygen.
