There could be several reasons for this:
1. Your browser does not save changes in configuration to the hard drive right away, so if it crashes before you have safely exited, it will forget any changes.
2. You have enabled a setting that clears private data on exit.
3. You have an errant plugin, add-on, or some form of adware that keeps overrriding your settings.
