Cats have wild relatives that are very close, some people even say that no cats are truly tame. A cat may feel uncomfterable having a human hand coming down on its head, because it does not know what you are doing. It is possible to win a cat's trust, however. This happens to me all the time with my cat and apparently it is just playing and stretching out when someone is praising it.

∙ 14y agoFrom my experience, it usually means that the cat either wants to play, or wants you to stop petting them. If the bite is gentle (doesn't draw blood and doesn't really hurt) the cat probably just wants to play. Watch cats play with each other, and you'll see that their playing looks a lot like fighting. If the bite really hurts, maybe the cat just wants to be near you, but doesn't want to be touched.
