The increase amount of mucous is the way your body is trying to rid itself of the allergen. It is thin and sticky and hopefully the thing causing the allergy (an allergen) will be trapped and will 'run out' with the mucous. Of course, not all allergens will be removed this way but your body has a general method of dealing with them.
