Photosynthesis is best in red light and very poor in green light. Chlorophylls absorb the red light and carotenoids absorb blue-green light, but green light is not effectively absorbed by photosynthetic pigments in plants; therefore, light of this color is either reflected by leaves or passes through the leaves. This is why plants are green. Red light is the most effective in photosynthesis because it has exactly the right amount of energy to energize, or excite chlorophyll electrons and boost them out of their orbits to a higher energy level.

Actually red light does not help plants grow faster it is blue light.

I did an experiment covering plants with: Clear cellophane, Blue cellophane, Red cellophane and green cellophane and the red was the third slowest and the blue one was the fastest.

Red light IS best for photosynthesis, which is responsible for making glucose for your plant to make energy. While Blue light is best for plant GROWTH. Green Light is just worthless except for making our plants green looking.

For starters: plants appear green because the green light that hits them is the least absorbed (most reflected or transmitted) of the visible wavelengths by chlorophyll pigments. The rest of the visible spectrum is captured as electrons and used to catabolize carbon dioxide and water into sugars.

The major wavelengths of light that are absorbed are at the boundaries of infrared and ultraviolet. They mostly use red and blue light to make sugars from CO2 and H2O, but the blue (higher energy) light has to be de-energized a bit, the red light is more readily usable.

Natural sunlight.

How does the colour of light affect plant growth?

Plants are green because the reflect green light. They do not use green light, they use red light to make food. Some plastic mulches are red to reflect red light onto plants to make them grow more.

If you use blue light in the day and red light at night it should grow twice as fast but, I would use red.

Can a bean grow with different color light?

Beans can grow with restricted light spectrum. Green plants grow best in blue and red light. Green and yellow light is not absorbed by the green plant but reflected.

What colors do plants need to grow?

Red and blue light is absorbed from the Sun. Green light is reflected off the plant.

Why don't plants grow better in artificial light?

Plants have chloroplasts in them, this gives the distinct green colour we are familiar with. It also REFLECTS green light, hence you need other wavelengths of visible light for the plant to be able to grow.
