Why does Santa come down the chimney when you build a fire?

It's the one place a person can enter a house without breaking in, such as a door or window. If you live in a place without a chimney, Santa will use magic to get in, but, he rather just go in and out through the chimney.

When the stories about him were written, doors and windows to houses were locked but every house had a chimney above the fireplace so it seemed natural that this must be how he got in. The stories come from Europe which is usually cold in December so that's why windows would all be closed tightly.

Since the start of the Santa Claus tradition, the holidays were exceptionally cold in Europe. Since it would be unhealthy to open the doors and windows, lest someone catch pneumonia, chimneys would typically be the only forever open entrance.
