In asexual reproduction there are 2 daughter cells produced that are identical to the parent cell. In sexual reproduction there are 4 genetically different daughter cells produced that are haploid (23 chromosomes). Crossing over occurs during meiosis which mixes up segments of DNA on homologous chromosomes causing new genetic variations. By the sperm fertilizing the egg, you are combining 2 completely different sets of different haploid DNA to produce a diploid offspring which is genetically different from both parents.

I'll use the examples from humans: In human gametes, there are 23 chromosomes and gametes are considered haploid cells because they have half of what the other body cells have. When fertilization occurs, genetic material from both the MOTHER and the FATHER are mixed together. Asexual reproduction only involves the genetics from one of the parents.

Sexual Reproduction adds the Genetic Material of BOTH Parents to create the Offspring. Asexual Reproduction only has one set of Genetic Material to work with. The Offspring will normally be a Genetic COPY of the single Parent.
