Slavery has played a big role in US history. The US imported slaves mostly to work the fields in the southern states. World opinion turned against slavery and the slave trade was outlawed . However slaves had become very important to the economy in several of the southern states and they did not want to stop the practice despite pressure from northern states who had abolished slavery. There were problems with returning runaway slaves and what to do with new states.
Slave states wanted to keep a balance so that slavery would not be outlawed by the Federal government. The problem was eventually settled by a bloody Civil War.
