The earth is divided into an imaginary id by lines of "latitude" and "longitude". Lines of latitude measue north and south, from 0 degrees (at the equator) to 90 degrees (at the earth's poles). Lines of longitude measue east and west, from 0 degrees to 180 degrees BUT there is no natural divider for 0 degrees and 180 degrees like ther is with the equator. SO it was agreed by navigators that 0 degrees would be the line of longitude that runs through Greenwich England. Therefore when travelling from 0 degrees (in England) to the FAR EAST (close to 180 degrees east) you are in Asian waters. If you travel to the WEST (close to 150 degrees west) you are in the United States. The reason that these terms now apply to countries and lifestyles is because China and the US (for example) are the major countries at those latitudes. Because it is on the far east.. I guess.. I mean tha!

What country in East Asia currently has the lowest percentage of its population living in urban areas?

East Asia usually only includes Mongolia, China, Taiwan, North Korea, South Korea, and Japan. However, there is also a region known as Southeast Asia, which could be considered East Asia. Even so, perhaps you meant the Far East, which includes both East and Southeast Asia. Papua New Guinea could be considered East Asia, although the country is usually defined as part of Oceania. Its urbanization rate is 12%, the second lowest in the world. Cambodia is in the Far East (Southeast Asia) and its urbanization rate is 22%, the 15th lowest in the world. China is truly the country in East Asia with the lowest urbanization rate, at 51%.

Is Japan a Southeast or a Northeast Asian Country?

Southeast Asia is Vietnam and its surrounding countries (Lao, Cambodia, etc.). Japan & China have traditionally been called the "Far East" (Far Orient). With all of the new terms people want to make in this century (e.g. Middle East/Southwest Asia, etc.)...Northeast Asia for Japan sounds fairly accurate. After all, Northeast of Japan is Alaska and the North Pole.
