Why does the battery discharge in a few hours and then after a booster start is back OK with 13 volts?

[Edit]

Answer

You either have a defective battery or something is on and drawing power from the battery. Look at dome lights, trunk light, under hood light, brake lights, glove box light, see if anything is on. If the battery if over 3 years old or has be discharged more than once, suspect the battery.

Answer

I used to have this problem with an '89 Thunderbird. It turned out to be a bad ground. On my car, it was the bolt that holds the little wire that connects the frame of the car to the negative battery terminal was rusted and corroded. A simple cleaning fixed it.
