The moon is always 50% illuminated by the sun ... (just as Earth is).
But as the moon revolves through various positions in its orbit around Earth,
the portion of that 50% that's visible from where we are changes continuously.
The moon appears in different shapes throughout the month because it is in a different position between the earth and the sun. The phases occur because the sun reflects off of only part of the moon.
As the moon orbits the earth, it moves from west to east. Its position relative to the sun also changes and as a result, we see different lunar phases. The sun lights half of the moon at all times. The moon's phase that we see depends on how much its sunlit hemisphere is facing earth.
because the moon is at a diiferent angle tword or away from the sun as it rotates. the more sun the moon gets at night the more we see it on Earth
This is because only parts of the moon receives light as moon moves. Seeing rest of the light is covered by Earth. There are lots of models out there, probably on internet as well, take a look
The gibbous phases of the Moon occur when the visible face of the Moon is more than half illuminated, but not fully illuminated.
Earthshine is the faint glow on the part of the moon that is shadowed. It is best seen during the waning and waxing crescent phases of the moon.

The changes in the moon's appearance are called lunar phases. They occur because of the moon's position relative to the sun and Earth, resulting in different amounts of the moon's illuminated surface visible from Earth.
For each orbit of the Earth by the Moon there are 2 crescents; the waxing crescent and the waning crescent.
The phases of the moon can be observed from any location on Earth.

3 to 5 phases
the moon is at new or full moon phases in other words between earth and sun, or 'behind' earth. This is because the gravitational pull works with the sun.
8 phases occur 4 wanning 4 waxing types

Higher-than-average "spring" tides occur at the new moon and full moon phases. Lower-than-average "neap" tides happen at the quarter-moon phases.
