There are two lungs simply called the left and right lungs. These large structures take up most of the Thoracic Cavity which changes tize in order to pull air in or push it out of the lung. The right lung has three Lobes (parts that sit on top of each other) While the left lung has only 2. This is because the left ventricle of the heart sits over to the left and takes up some of the space the left lung would otherwise inhabit. The left lung has a curved gap for the heart called the Cardiac Notch.
because the heart is there

By lobes I assume you mean Pouches. (A 6-8 sided sponge) Basically.

Well this is a good question, and I will give it a good answer:

Lungs have these "Sponges" for a very good reason.

Surface area.

Think about this: Inside a balloon is a round wall that completes a shape.

Now, if you were to add in sponges that stick out a bit, while still allowing the wall to be shown, you could increase your "surface area" thus allowing the lungs to More effectively absorb air.

With ought these sponges, the lungs couldn't function as well as we need them to. They branch out and allow air to surround them on all sides. Allowing greater rates of absorption.

I hope this answers your question.

The left lung does actually have a small third lobe known as the lingular lobe, however it does not have three full lobes as does the right lung. This is because of the position of the heart in the left side of the chest.

the right lung is larger and has more lobes than the left, because the heart is normally located on the left side and takes up space where the lungs would have been.

Because the heart is on the left lung and there wasn't anymore room on the left lung.

Contrast left lung and right lung?
