Probably the drain hose from the dishwasher isn't high enough to keep the water from running back . The hose should be above the level of the disposal at some point.

Some states require an "air gap" which is a device that is placed in the drain line to prevent this. Some states require a simple high loop in the drain hose. Many dishwasher manufacturers are now installing backflow preventers in the dishwasher.

Can you run the dishwasher if the garbage disposal is not connected?

The disposal has to be in place so that the drain on the dishwasher is connected. If you do not have a disposal or are removing it, there is a extension tube for the drain that has the dishwasher tube in it. The disposal does not have to work for the dishwasher to drain. The water is run through the disposal so that any food particles get ground before going in the drain. After a while, the disposal will begin to smell if it is not run.

Why does dishwasher water drain out backing into the sink?

The disposal is clogged or that side of the sink is.

does the outlet for the dishwasher have to be on the same side of the garbage disposal drainage outlet?

Yes the outlet for the dishwasher should be on the same side as the disposal,so the disposal can handle the waste water from the dishwasher.

Can you eliminate the air vent on top of sink for a dishwasher?

Yes, the air vent (air gap) is very much required!! It prevents water from traveling from the sink drain pipe or garbage disposal and into the dishwasher.

Why would kitchen sink water back up into the dishwasher after you use the garbage disposal?

Check and see if the water line going from the dishwasher to the disposal has enough slack to run up and over the connection to the disposal. If its just running along the cabinet floor and straight up into the disposal that's the problem. Its called an anti siphon loop

How do you hook water line from dishwasher to disposal?

To hook a drain line, not a water line, from the dishwasher to the garbage disposer is as follows: there is a connection on the garbage disposer for a dishwasher (on the side) There is a plastic fitting that came with the disposer(if all parts were saved) The fitting is going to look like it has barbed ridges(fortubing toslide over)on one end and a flange and seal at the other end. 1) make sure the plastic is knocked out of the disposer where the fitting connects to. 2) Connect fitting to disposer using 2 screws 3) Connect drain hose from dishwasher to disposer by sliding rubber gromet over plastic barbed fitting. Make sure you cut the rubber gromet to the right size of the fitting 4) Use hose clamp over rubber gromet. 5) Use zip ties to hang drain tubing as high as you can so water wont drain back into dishwasher. (new dishwashers ususally have p-trap built into the drain line already.) thats it. should work

Why on a double-bowl sink does the water shoot up and out of the other side when the garbage disposal is turned on if the pipes are all clear under the sink?

The disposal is forcing the water out. It seems your down drain must be further away than the 2nd sink and the water is taking the path of least resistance to go somewhere fast. tthere is an inlet on the side of your disposal for a dishwasher hook up. Ceck that if there is no dishwasher hookup going into your disposal you need to plug that hole. == Answer== It could be someone did not use a baffle tee. It is always best to plumb disposal into p-trap first and use waste arm to connect basket strainer. They may have it the other way with no baffle.

Can you run your dishwasher if your sink is clogged?

Probably not, depends on where the clog is at and how the dishwasher drain is connected. I wouldn't chance it, but the worst that will happen is the sink will fill with the water from the dishwasher.

When large amount of water is poured into the sink with the garbage disposal where the dishwasher drains would a one way valve help with water backing up into the dishwasher?

The pump in the dishwasher should keep the water from getting into it.

How can you fix a dishwasher that has garbage disposal water in it?

When your dishwasher drains the water comes out the aerator what is wrong?

The sink drain is plugged,or you have the dishwasher hose hooked up in wrong place.

Why does the disposal empty the water out of the sink and then it comes right back?

the drain line is completely or partially blocked, the drain line needs to be snaked out. the disposal is forcing what water it can down into the pipes but if there is an obstruction the water has no place to go but back into the sink.
