Chlorophyll in the leaves splits the water into Hydrogen and Oxygen.The oxygen is given out through pores called stomata.The Hydrogen is combined with Carbon Dioxide( taken in through stomata) to form Starch which is consumed by the plants for energy and growth.

Water is also essential for transport of nutrients to various parts of the plant and also for numerous biochemical reactions.
