There are several reasons for chest pain when you cough. One is that you have over-taxed your rib muscles and they are sore or even sprained. You might also have a more serious infection like bronchitis or even pneumonia. You should see a doctor to be sure which of these it is.

∙ 6y agoIf your chest hurts when you cough you might have bronchitis that when you smoke or put something that has germs in your mouth, ears or nose this happens by a virus,germs,dust,allergens or pollutants and many other irritants. Then if you continue you will develop pneumonia you might die from that. So if your chest is hurting while you cough go to the hospital or urgent care center

∙ 12y agobroken rib? or perhaps you pulled an intercostal muscle. between each rib is a muscle that holds them together. This is the part you eat if it were a pig or cow. And since it IS a muscle it can cramp and strain and be pulled just like any other. But it also could be chest pain of...you might have a heart attack in the future kind... it's worth checking out... better safe than sorry and I'm sure your Dr. could use the money.
