Is vaginal discharge in a dog normal?

For the same reason a human does. The dog is changing on the inside. Things are being pushed in every direction. The discharge sometimes may be urine. If you are really worried, contact your vet.

Pregnant dogs normally have a discharge, looks like white, cloudy string, that drips intermittently from the vulva. This is normal.

Towards the every end of the pregnancy, the discharge can change slightly in color, normally to a slight green, but it is still stringy, intermittent and not of a great quantity.

While not the best possible answer, one reason why pregnant dogs might urinate more than usual is because of the pressure on their bladder, and the need to filter out the blood more quickly because of pregnancy.

The menstrual cycle in a bitch is much the same as with a human. So some bleeding is normal, expect only a few small spots of blood for large breeds. Small urine leaks are also common, usually immediately after the bitch has toileted or if she becomes very excited (common in dalmatians for example)

If your bitch seems to have large discharges of urine then this could be a sign of bladder weakness which is fairly uncommon in dogs but does happen with age. It could also suggest a bladder infection. It should be checked for her sake, and for the sake of your carpets.

If your bitch discharges large amounts of blood then consult a vet. This can represent serious and very real life threatening situations. Remember though, small spots of blood is normal unless the bitch is neutered.

If your bitch bleeds and she is neutered, consult a vet as this should NOT happen.

It is important not to punish your bitch for 'accidents' such as described. It can cause severe personality and confidence problems for your companion and may impede safe bowel movements. If however your bitch is simply toileting inside as a matter of convenience or laziness. then you should enforce strict discipline and punishment in order to put an end to it.

If your bitch is pregnant then oddly coloured fluid discharges are normal, same applies if she has just given birth. If you are not sure if she is pregnant, then this can be an early sign. However, she should have gained enough weight to have given you an inclination of pregnancy at this point anyway.

It could be a sexually transmitted disease from an older dog licking it.
