Why does a cat bites?

You may have done something to provoke him. If he does it again, look for any similarities between this time and the time before. He may be playing however; some cats simply play rough, and there isn't anything you can do about that. But here's my favorite reason:

It could mean he loves you. If he's gently nibbling or gnawing on you, it's a cat "kiss". You might want to tap him on the nose so he doesn't do it, but you should feel privileged if this is the case. Cats do whatever they want so if a cat bites theres no reason what it means.

Kittens often bite or scratch because they want to play, though there is a possibility it is aggression.

However, here's a trick that worked with my cat to get her to stop biting and scratching when she was being too rough. Normally when kittens play, and one of the kittens gets too rough, the other kitten will usually squeak so the other kitten lets go, and then they will bop the first kitten in the nose. This little light bop in the nose, or push, lets the kitten or cat know that whatever they did hurt, and that they shouldn't do it next time, or if they do they should be gentler. It works the same way between human and cat interactions. If your kitten is being too rough, simply say, "Ouch!" and bring the tip of your finger down on their nose. Repeat if necessary until they get the picture. Remember not to be too hard about it, though.

Cats bite when you pet them because they feel afraid. Never pet a cat unless it smells your hand first. Even if it is your cat it may still be scared of you and your family. Always let a cat see your hand before you go to pet it.

Because that's what they have??? Cat fangs aren't like a snakes. They CAN NOT retract them into the skull. The fangs are permanently in place so if they bite you, you're probably going to get a fang related wound. However, cats do know how hard they need to bite to break the skin so if your cat ever does with you, it's because it feels threatened or intruded upon. Seek professional behavioral advice if you have a cat that always makes you bleed.

It's just a part of their development. They love to play and it sounds like this little kitten has taken a liking to biting. Unfortunately, many kittens are taken away from their mother's too early (6-8 weeks is too early), so they have not been given time to learn vital social skills, such as how to behave with other cats and people - for instance, that biting hurts! These skills are learned between 8-12 weeks old, and if missed, can develop into behavioural issues later on in life.

Be sure not to let the kitten play with your hands - if the kitten does bite your hands, distract him or her with a toy. Alternatively, keep your hand still until the kitten has let go, and then ignore the kitten for a few minutes. The kitten will soon learn that biting or playing rough will stop any fun playtime or attention. Reward gentle behaviour.
