You may have a bad temperature sending unit. If that switch is defective, you will get a faulty reading. Also check the radiator to see if the coolant is flowing and there is no blockage in the radiator itself. Also check the belt for tightness.

How do you know if the thermostat needs replaced in tracker?

Is you Geo Tracker overheating or the temperature is running almost hot then you need to change you thermostat

Where is the thermostat on a 1993 Nissan Maxima and how do I replace it?

Almost all thermostats are located at the motor where the top radiator hose connects to the motor. Drain the coolant, remove the 2 bolts in the thermostat housing, replace the thermostat, and replace the housing and refill the radiator.

Why does your truck seem like it is overheating after replacing the thermostat when it is not losing any coolant or boiling over?

3 weeks ago you found the upper radiator hose almost completely squeezed in on itself so you replaced the thermostat and upper hose! Also, the cooling system has been flushed and refilled and the cap has been replaced! Could be a partially plugged radiator. Flushing will not always take care of this. I would check the thermostat in a pot of water and thermometer prior to install. I have installed faulty new thermostats. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. thermostat in upside down ? spring should be in the block dying fuel pump

2001 chevytahoe check collant light went on thermostat almost hit the 260 red mark what causes this?

You are probably low on coolant, check the overflow bottle next time you stop, but judging by the high temp you are missing quite a bit of coolant.

How do the pumps thermostats radiator and coolant in a car cooling system maintain the motor at a relatively constant operating temperature?

The thermostat is key to maintaining relatively constant temperatures. It is basically a temp. sensitive spring operating a plug. It can be open or closed or partially open, depending on the engine temperature. When the car is cold, the thermostat almost completely prevents coolant from entering or leaving the engine. As the engine warms up to operating temperature and higher, the thermostat opens and allows coolant to circulate from the engine to the radiator. If the engine becomes too cool, the thermostat will close again. Coolant circulation is aided by the waterpump. When the engine's heat contained in the coolant reaches the radiator, it passes through a maze of finned tubes which allow the heat to transfer to the air flowing through (sometimes aided by a fan) the radiator. Now the cooled coolant circulates back into the engine to absorb more heat and repeat the cycle.

How do you locate and replace the thermostat on a 1998 Mazda Protege?

On almost all cars, the thermostat housing is right where the top radiator hose meets the engine itself. Drain 50% of the coolant, remove the housing bolts, remove the thermostat (note how it is positioned so you don't put the new one in upside down) scrape the old gasket material off the engine and housing, put new thermostat in, put new gasket in place, attatch housing with bolts (don't overtighten)...and refill with coolant. If there is a screw on the housing, start car, loosen screw until coolant starts to come out with no bubbles. This will bleed air out of the system so the motor doesn't overheat.

If a Ford Tempo GL 2.3 continually almost overheats but there appears to be no antifreeze leak what is wrong?

I would do a complete coolant replacement and have the system flushed. Also replace the thermostat, and radiator cap, which may very well be your problem. If you are loosing coolant and there is no apparent leak, then you may have a blown head gasket. This can do serious damage to the engine. Have this looked into ASAP.

What causes the engine to run hot on a Toyota Camry?

First, make sure you have the coolant tank filled to the proper level. Next, make sure your engine fan IS working (spinning). If both are ok, its almost safe to say your thermostat is stuck in the closed position, or not opening fully . In that case it is an easy fix, you just need a new thermostat. If you replace the thermostat and still have an overheating problem, that means you have a clog somewhere in your coolant system, or the flow of coolant isn't good enough. If you don't have flow, that means something is making your water pump not work properly. And if your water pump is working properly, that means you have a clog. Clogs most likely take place in the radiator itself. GOOD LUCK!

The radiator was just replaced and now green coolant is coming out. No smoke no other symptoms - but coolant comes almost all out. What's wrong Looks like from the bottom of engine.?

coolant is not circulating - open the heater and bleed the system ++ Another Answer ++ If the lower radiator hose is installed correctly and the hose clamp is tight and the "coolant comes almost all out ... like from the bottom of the engine", you may have a bad freeze plug that either rusted or popped out. You might want to get under the vehicle and inspect the bottom part of the engine. CAUTION: Be sure and block all wheels to keep vehicle from rolling over you.

After changing the thermostat and water pump on your 1989 Jeep Cherokee it still heats up what could be wrong?

The radiator may be clogged preventing water flow into the engine. With the engine cold, remove the radiator cap. Start the engine and let it warm up to the point where it should open the thermostat. Observe the flow of water in the radiator. If you can't see the water moving, the flow is being impeded somehow. Also suspect the coolant temperature sensor (located next to the thermostat housing).you may have an air pocket in the coolant lines preventing proper flow of the coolant.be sure to flush the system thoroughly to remove any airpockets. There is a bolt on the thermostat housing which you can remove (when cool) that by-passes the thermostat, allowing you to fill coolant. Use a small funnel and fill to top, then replace the bolt. This will allow the coolant in the block to reach water pump, heating thermostat, and circulating the coolant through radiator, etc. Also, remove the overflow bottle, and using a stiff wire (coat hanger in my case) make sure the pipe connecting the bottle to the system is clear. My case I had a calcium-like blockage stopping flow and creating air/steam in system.I just changed the water pump, thermostat, flushed the system. Make sure no air is in the closed presurized coolant system, air in the system stops the water from moving around.Usually the fan clutch deteriates after the water pump went.It could also be that your oil pump is on the way out. Do you have good oil pressure via the pressure gauge? Are any "check engine" lights coming on? Good luck, Badgirl.check the coolant bottle for cracks etc. and also check the pressure capon the bottle. the cap can be no good and appear to be fine. best advice.....go buy a new pressure cap from the dealer and see what happens. i changed almost my whole cooling system before i did the bottle and cap.....nothing got it to run cool until i bought and installed them!!!I, too replaced thermostat, radiator cap, ect, even the cap on the coolant bottle. Finally, I had to replace the plastic bottle itself. Jeep dealer told me they are plastic, and therefore they warp with age.

How do you determine if a car thermostat needs to be replaced?

A thermostat can stick occasionally or fail altoghether so the symptoms can be different, depending on what the thermostat is doing. Sometimes they stick until the temperature goes to an extreme. When that happens, the engine can get very cold and/or very hot before the thermostat opens or closes, then suddenly the temperature will change within just a few seconds. If the thermostat is just plain stuck or stops working altoghether, the engine will either overheat or stay relatively cool. You almost need to imagine what's going on to cause the condition that you're seeing.

Where is the thermostat on a 1997 Nissan truck?

Follow the hose from the top of the radiator to the metal fitting on the engine (should almost look like half a ball with a fitting the hose is attached to coming out at an angle). The thermostat is located under/between the fitting and the engine block. Drain coolant down several inches in radiator so it's below the level of the fitting. Remove hose/hose clamp from fitting, and 2 bolts from block. Seal SHOULD be a neoprene o-ring, so if it's in decent shape and not damaged/degraded, it can probably be reused, replace if unsure. Change thermostat, replace parts in reverse, and refill coolant in radiator.
