Oliver Twist's popularity might be attributed to its happy ending. It was certainly a departure from the gaiety of Pickwick, but the book contains several motifs that catch the reader's interest (sometimes subliminally), like mistaken identity, the fun of the people's names, even the purity and beauty of Oliver's character. These things engage the reader, all the while Dickens is delivering a message that challenges the system of governmental charity comprised by the Poor Laws, which were little more than imprisonment.
