Dates back to the days of accumulators where each cell produced1.5 volts. Adding cells in series made 3,6,12 and 24 volts easy to produce. 12v is the standard for the light automotive industry becauses it is the best voltage level to economically provide sufficient current to power things, using the smallest cables. The more items you can produce that operate from a single voltage the cheaper they become. That means, for example, that just four types of headlamp bulb will fit the majority of motorcycles, cars and light vans in the whole of the world.
