∙ 11y agoThis unusual martial custom may just be practical to get the focus on the starry portion of the flag, at about the size of a pillow. Sleep ( what is done on pillows) in Heavenly ( the stars) peace! No connection with Silent night but it is a good memory jog.

∙ 13y agoLilke many martial customs this is of lost origin but MIGHT have something to do with the Three-corner or Tricorn hat certainly used by the Army in the time of Washington and other colonials. The Trumpet has three valves- all are used in TAPS, also funeral oriented. The Tricorn hat idea makes sense.
