The term "wide brown land" was first coined by Australian poet Dorothea Mackellar in her poem entitled My Country(originally titled "Core of My Heart"). The second verse of the poem, and arguably the most well-knwon verse, goes thus:

I love a sunburnt country,

A land of sweeping plains,

Of ragged mountain ranges,

Of droughts and flooding rains.

I love her far horizons,

I love her jewel-sea,

Her beauty and her terror -

The wide brown land for me!

Being prone to frequent droughts, expansive plains of dry, brown grass and tinder-dry bushland are not uncommon in Australia. In addition, much of the land is semi-arid, giving rise to the appearance of reddish brown soil across most of these semi-arid regions.
