You cannot become a pediatrician with just a Bachelor's degree. Once you have completed The Bachelor's, you have to attend medical school and acquire a doctorate degree in Medicine before being able to apply for a medical license.

The best idea would be a BS in Biology and/or Chemistry. You will have to have a good grade point average (GPA) and pass the Graduate Record Exams (GRE) with a good score and pass the Medical School Aptitude tests (MCATs).

The first year of Med School is heavy in Gross and Microscopic Anatomy and Physiology. The second year covers Abnormal Anatomy and Physiology. The last two years are clinical and use the first two as a strong base. If you get a BA in another subject you will be at a disadvantage.

Their is really no difference - in terms of importance - whether one pursing a career as a medical doctor has a bachelor of science or bachelor of arts degree. While many individuals who pursue a career as a physician major in biology at the undergraduate level, many others come from a variety of other educational backgrounds. The best major should be based on a contingency plan. In other words, what happens if you do not go to medical school? What will you be able to do with the degree that you have, and will it provide you with a satisfying career or career path? You should meet with a career counselor at the college or university you attend for what options exist for you. Whichever major you choose, the critical issue is acquiring the appropriate prerequisite coursework required by medical schools. The student should have a strong background in the following areas.

  • Biology (cell biology, biology of the organism)
  • Chemistry (inorganic, organic)
  • Physics
  • Communication (written and oral)
  • Higher level math's (algebra, trigonometry, calculus)
  • Computer literacy
  • Development of good critical thinking skills.
