Why is Ecole Superieure Robert de Sorbon criticized when it is accredited by Ministere de l'Education Nationale as Sorbon.fr and listed in Ministere Officiel - ecoles professionnelles Vienne 86?

update January 2010 Agreed it may mean ''little''but does mean ''something'', having a degree from a legal unaccredited institution may be better then not having a degree at all. If it suits your purpose that 's personal. For further education an unacreddited is almost useless but for emploment purpose a legal unacreddited degree may be useable.

update April 2009. It is critised on its academic merit. Legal status has nothing to do with it. I believe that any 'accredited' institution would not accept a degree from this private institute.. The below means very little if you wish to use this degree for further education or employment,

The first problem is the marketing approach of the school, which naturally raises question marks ???? with lots of people. Why is the school so defensive ?

The school publicly announces on the website ''We are not a diploma mill !!!""

In reaction to that people's natural response is

''the harder you deny something, 'the more guilty you appear''.

A second issue is the quality. The minister of France does not

''guarantee the quality of some of the private schools in France'',

''this unless'' they have signed a contract with the ministry of education.

This does not mean the school is operating illegally, but that the school is

Ecole Superieure Robert de Sorbon has been licensed and ''authorized'' to operate by the authorities as an independent private institution of higher learning in France .

Acording to the Council of Europe ''Authorization'' is A LEVEL UNDER ''Recognition'', the private ecole and its qualifications ''are not not recognized by the state''.

All Private education in France is regulated by the education law.

All schools in France, public and private are under supervision of the authorities .

The ESRS degrees are legal, but not recognized by the state.

Other private schools also not recognized by the state such as INSEAD,

These schools upgrade their acceptence and worldwide recognition by e.g.

reputation and relationships with recognized institutions .

Unlike other private institutions, does ESRS very little to ensure national and international acceptance of their qualifications.

Because the VAE (Validation des Acquis de l'Experience)is not well received by conservative in the US Academia. To be allowed legally to grant a University degree based (totally or Partially) on Valuable Work Experience seems normal but it threatens some people who fears for their jobs and still consider education as an abstract intellectual elitist bureaucracy.

Fortunately or unfortunately, the institution seems to be recognized by the French Ministry of National Education and is thus not a diploma mill, as of December, 2010. Whether or not U.S. employers will recognize degrees from there is an entirely different matter--at the sole discretion of the employer. Ecole Superieure Robert de Sorbon per the description of French law is NOT a University or College in North American terminology. The de Sorbon itself doesn't make that claim either. Furthermore, based on French law only public higher education institutions are allowed to be called "University" and grant degrees based on courses taken at the university. Now you may ask then what is de Sorbon based on the French law and the de Sorbon description is in American terminology is a Degree/Proven Work-training knowledge evaluator and that's where the name VAE arises -- basically higher education institutions (Higher Education "Schools" in French term) are permitted to evaluate and Validate Acquired Experience (Validate=through Jury investigation Acquired=through proven documented years of training/certifications Experience: Provide documentation demonstrating the experience either provided by the employer or proven feedback from known clients such as companies, businesses or better corporations letters). In conclusion, you can NOT get a degree and as stated on deSorbon site, they will not invent a transcript for people and each case has to be evaluated and validated. I think the issue mainly raised due to the low tech site that De sorbon has -- I do not represent the school and neither am a student. I think de Sorbon should improve their site and remove links that don't work and remove old graduation pictures. Graduation pictures are news and should not be the main topic. I think the service that de Sorbon provides is useful for employers to view the validated experience of an applicant in a tangible (equivalent degree) to understand. But if you are planning to use it as an academic degree to pursue your academic education it all depended on where (in the world) you live and the law of your area. I recommend it for validating you experience for employment only. At the end education is for employment (self or otherwise). De sorbon in the USA mainly has received many unfair attacks mainly (such as degreeinfo blog) due to lack of understanding what it is based in the French law (as an evaluator and validator of proven knowledge) and due it's low tech website which resembles a old USA based diploma mills. So if de Sorbon upgrade the site and explain in American team that it is NOT a university and is a degree evaluator for validation through a jury review based on French law that work or that may even more confuse people in the USA. So that's what it is NOT a school/university and just a evaluator -- if you want to take courses look for University but if you are older and have years and years of documented work training then de Sorbon may, only may work if you pass the jury's approval.
