Believe it or not Fortunato was the antagonist in "The Cask of Amontillado". This is because as you read in the beginning of the story Montresar says that Fortunato had insulted his family's name. When reading this story you must know that back in the time that this story is based in your name was all you had. Your name was like your house, and your car, and your clothes, and your money, etc. When anyone pokes fun at your family's name, and by poke fun I don't mean making fun of a last name, I mean saying how all Millers are lowlifes, poor beggars. Anything along those lines. So when Montresor says that Fortunato slandered his last name, that sets him off. The story also hints that Fortunato is arrogant and quite full of himself, and that he had done alot of other things to Montresor in the past, but when he slanders his families name he's had enough. That shows that Fortunato was antagonizing Montresor for some time and also had it coming for him.
