Friday is sacred for Muslims because,

Muslims believe: the prophet muhammed (pbuh) said: "the best day on which the sun rises is Friday.On it Adam was created,on it he was expelled (from paradise), on it his repetance was accepted, on it he died and on it the Last Hour will take place." i hope this helps answer your question.

It is the compulsory gathering praying and is preceded by a sermon.

Quran says (meaning English translation):

{O you who believe! when the call is made for prayer on Friday, then hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave off trading; that is better for you, if you know. (9) But when the prayer is ended, then disperse abroad in the land and seek of Allah's grace, and remember Allah much, that you may be successful. (10)} (Quran, chapter 62, verses 9-10).

It is a good occasion for Muslims to meet together and listen to sermons and feel equality when praying all together in rows without any distinguishing among the rich and the poor or any other kinds of differences.

It is the Muslim's holiday as commanded by Allah (God in English) in Quran.

However, it should not be understood that it is a holiday for Muslims in the same sense that Saturday or Sunday are holidays for the Jews and Christians where claimed that in this holiday God took rest after the six day of universe creation. It is believed by Muslims, and according to the Koran holy book sayings, that God (Allah) do not need to rest after any act of creation. Every thing created by God is by the word 'be' then 'it is'. By this Word Adam was created and by this Word Jesus (peace upon him) was created in the womb of the Virgin Mary (Maryam).

The Muslims holiday of Friday is called in Arabic 'Al-Gomaaa' that means 'the gathering'. In this day, Muslims gather in the Mosque for the noon prayer "called Al-Gomaa prayer" and for listening to the sermon delivered by the Mosque leader, called Imam. Muslims are allowed to work before and/or after the prayer . They are allowed to do all activities as on any other normal day.

Quran says:

Meaning English translation:

{O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew. (9) And when the prayer has been concluded, disperse within the land and seek from the bounty of Allah, and remember Allah often that you may succeed. (10) But when they saw a transaction or a diversion, [O Muhammad], they rushed to it and left you standing. Say, "What is with Allah is better than diversion and than a transaction, and Allah is the best of providers." (11)}

[Quran, chapter 62, Surat Al-Jouma'a, verses 9-11]
