Why is Hades so important to Greek mythology?

Hades is the Lord of the Underworld, though not death itself. He is the god of wealth and hospitality, and the Greeks often called him "the Rich One" and "the Hospitable One", rather than by his name, because they feared that they would soon die if they did. Without him, the Underworld would be in chaos because there would be no one to watch over it and keep order. He kidnapped Persephone, and her mother, Demeter, refused to let the earth grow, so he also caused winter.
